You Are Your Worst Critic

Writing is difficult at times because we have an understanding that no matter what we write about, somehow part of who we are and how we think is in there.  We reference past relationships or use friends and family as a mirror to our characters.  Sometimes the ideals and morality that is told in a story, whether fictional or not, has an undertone that comes from a personal place.  Because I am aware of this it makes it difficult to write sometimes.  I am a clam when it comes to most of the matters of my life so if I say too much, even indirectly, it comes through to someone that is also a writer.

I like to keep a certain amount of my identity to myself, and for this reason I struggle at times to write as freely as I think.  I have slowly learned that I can't hide myself from my writing because it is so much a part of what I do that without including it, I really don't have a lot to say.  So if you are insecure about showing yourself in your writing, you shouldn't be.  It just might be the best part anyway.

  1. It is one of the hardest things to learn, but once you open up and write freely that is when you are dealing with the good stuff. Welcome to the IWSG.

  2. Letting ourselves into our writing adds so much spark and depth but you're right, its hard to do. I am getting better at it but I still cringe when I let someone read what I've written. Its like handing them a piece of my soul... Very nerve wracking.

  3. Welcome to IWSG! I think most writers feel exposed in some way. We lay our emotions bare to the world, inviting people to step on our feelings. :) Have you ever considered writing under a pen name?

  4. There's so much truth to your words. I like my privacy too, and sometimes it gets in the way of my writing.

  5. I'm probably in the same place, as I like to keep my private life private. However I will admit my morality comes through in my writing. I think it's impossible to keep us completely out of our work.

  6. It's funny b/c no matter how much I think I'm not my MC, my friends read it and say they think of me as her, lol. Not my intention . . . don't want to seem like I have some God complex or something. nice to meet another Jamie in IWSG!

  7. I know so much I can't reveal. It really gets in the way.

  8. I am insecure about my writing as I don't consider myself a writer but more a blabber since I have a tendency to talk one's ears off. My grammar sucks but oh well:) I love creating cards and use that blog to write. I haven't written in a long time since I felt so insecure(funny eh?) but I never had a problem showing myself as I don`t really care what people think (well that`s not true but I still will hold true to me). In any writing one always shows more than one even realizes and that is what makes reading it so interesting and worthwhile

  9. I'm still playing catch up with IWSG, so sorry I'm late to the party.

It really is a difficult aspect of writing to deal with, but I agree with your very last line: it just might be the best part. It's what makes our stories unique, what we have to add and offer that no one else can. Of course, its easy for me because people in my life don't know I write, otherwise I would think its too private to share as well. Writers! We're so complicated lol

    Welcome to the group ;)

  10. So true. I am my own worst critic. It's why I don't criticize my work at all any more. My editor does that. lol
